Brazilian Blowout vs. Keratin vs. Opti.Smooth vs. Relaxer

What’s the difference — and which one is right for your hair?
You’re tired of frizz.
Your blow-dry takes forever.
Humidity has become your personal enemy.
So you start looking at smoothing services and suddenly you’re staring at:
Brazilian Blowout. Keratin. Opti.Smooth.
And naturally the question becomes:
“Sparkle…aren’t these basically the same thing?”
Nope. 😂
They can all make hair smoother and easier to manage, but they work differently and can create very different results.
The easiest way I explain it is:
Brazilian Blowout = FRIZZ CONTROL
Keratin = SMOOTHING + SOFTENING
Opti.Smooth = TEXTURE CHANGE
Let's get into it.
1. Brazilian Blowout
“I like my hair — I just want it to behave.”
For this comparison, I’m talking about the Original Brazilian Blowout.
Brazilian Blowout is a temporary, customizable smoothing service designed primarily to control frizz, smooth the cuticle, add shine, and make the hair easier to style.
The manufacturer describes the Original service as creating a protective protein layer around the hair and says results can last up to 12 weeks with appropriate aftercare.
What I love about it:
You don't necessarily have to give up your texture.
We can customize the result.
You might want:
Curl — minus the frizz.
Wave — but smoother.
Straight hair — with less puffiness.
Or a much sleeker finish.
Brazilian Blowout is great for:
Frizzy hair
Humidity problems
Puffy hair
Wavy or curly clients who want better manageability
Someone who wants faster blow-drying
Clients who do NOT want a permanent texture change
Someone who wants smoother, shinier hair without committing to permanent straightening
What happens as it grows out?
There generally isn't a hard line between treated and untreated hair.
The smoothing effect gradually wears away instead of leaving you with permanently straight lengths and naturally textured roots.
Maintenance:
Think roughly up to 12 weeks, depending on your hair, home care, and how often you shampoo.
Styling afterward:
This is where Brazilian Blowout really shines.
You can still:
Blow it out
Curl it
Wear your natural texture
Flat iron it
Add volume
You simply have less frizz to fight first.
Sparkle translation:
“I want easier hair, not different hair.”
This is usually the lane we're in.
2. Keratin Smoothing Treatment
“I want smoother, softer hair and I’m okay relaxing some of my texture.”
This is where terminology gets tricky because “keratin treatment” is a category, not one universal formula.
Different professional keratin systems can behave differently.
In general, a keratin smoothing service is designed to make hair feel smoother, softer, shinier, and more manageable while reducing frizz and often relaxing some curl or wave.
Unlike a permanent straightening service, the result gradually fades.
Keratin is great for:
Frizz
Coarser textures
Hair that feels rough or difficult to smooth
Clients who want more softness than a basic anti-frizz service
Someone who wants to loosen some texture without permanently restructuring it
Clients who frequently wear their hair blown out or straight
The big difference from Brazilian Blowout:
I think of Brazilian Blowout as being highly focused on frizz control while preserving styling flexibility.
Keratin tends to move farther toward:
smooth + soft + relaxed
Depending on the formula and technique, you may notice more reduction in curl or volume.
Maintenance:
This varies considerably by the professional keratin system used, your hair, shampoo frequency, and home care.
It's still considered a temporary smoothing service rather than permanent straightening.
Important:
Some keratin systems have specific aftercare instructions about when you can shampoo, get the hair wet, or put it into a ponytail.
That’s another reason I don't like treating every “keratin” service as though it's identical.
Sparkle translation:
“I still don't want permanent straightening, but I want MORE smoothing.”
Keratin may be the better conversation.
3. Matrix Opti.Smooth
“I want to actually CHANGE my texture.”
Now we have entered a completely different category.
Opti.Smooth is not simply a smoothing coating that gradually shampoos away.
It is a professional chemical texture service.
Matrix describes Opti.Smooth as a conditioning smoothing system using thio technology. Its heat-straightening technique uses a flat iron to create fully straight, sleek hair, while its cold-smoothing technique can reduce volume and frizz while preserving more body and movement.
That makes this a much bigger commitment.
With Opti.Smooth, we can choose the result.
Heat Straightening
This is the serious straight option.
The goal is:
Straight. Smooth. Sleek.
The hair that has been permanently processed stays altered.
Your natural texture grows back from the scalp.
Cold Smoothing
This is a softer option.
Rather than taking the hair all the way to completely straight, the goal can be:
Less volume
Less frizz
More manageability
Smoother texture
Body and movement remaining
Matrix specifically distinguishes these two Opti.Smooth techniques.
Opti.Smooth is great for:
Someone who consistently wears their hair straight
Very curly, wavy, or resistant texture
Clients who want a major reduction in texture
Someone willing to maintain the new growth
A client looking for a longer-term change rather than temporary smoothing
What happens when it grows?
This is the biggest difference.
Your processed hair stays altered while your natural texture grows back at the root.
That means eventually there will be a difference between your new growth and previously straightened hair.
Future appointments focus on appropriate new growth rather than repeatedly processing everything from roots to ends.
Sparkle translation:
“I'm ready to break up with my natural texture.”
Now we're talking Opti.Smooth.
4. Relaxer
“I want to permanently reduce or straighten my natural curl.”
A relaxer belongs in a completely different category from temporary smoothing treatments.
Unlike a Brazilian Blowout or keratin treatment, a relaxer chemically changes the structure of the hair that has been processed.
That change does not gradually shampoo away.
Your natural texture grows back from the scalp, and future appointments are generally focused on maintaining that new growth rather than repeatedly relaxing the previously processed hair.
Relaxers can be used to create different results
Not every client necessarily wants their hair bone straight.
Depending on the hair, product, technique, and desired result, the goal may be:
Significant curl reduction
Easier straightening
Less bulk and volume
More manageability
A straighter finished texture
That conversation needs to happen before the service.
Relaxer may be right for you if:
You wear your hair straight most of the time
You want a permanent reduction in your natural curl pattern
You want significantly less shrinkage or bulk
You understand that your natural texture will continue growing in at the roots
You're prepared for ongoing maintenance and professional home care
The biggest difference?
Brazilian Blowout and Keratin:
The effect is temporary and gradually fades.
Opti.Smooth and Relaxer:
We are chemically altering the texture of the processed hair.
That is a much bigger commitment.
Opti.Smooth vs. Relaxer
Clients may wonder why both are on the menu if they're both capable of permanently changing texture.
The answer is that they use different chemical systems and techniques, and they are not automatically interchangeable.
The right choice depends on things like:
Your natural texture
Your desired amount of straightening
Hair condition
Previous chemical services
Color history
Existing relaxer or straightening history
How you plan to maintain the hair
This is especially important:
If your hair has already been chemically relaxed or permanently straightened, tell your stylist exactly what was previously used.
Do not assume two straightening systems can simply be layered over one another.
Hair keeps receipts. 😂

So Which One Is Right for Me?
“I LOVE my curls. I just hate the frizz.”
Brazilian Blowout
“I want to keep some movement, but I want my hair noticeably smoother.”
Keratin
“I wear my hair straight and want a major texture change.”
Opti.Smooth
“I want to permanently reduce my natural curl and make straight styling much easier.”
Relaxer
But there is one answer I want clients to remember:
You shouldn't choose these services by name alone.
Your hair history matters.
Before deciding, your stylist needs to know about:
Bleach
Highlights
Permanent color
Previous relaxers
Previous straightening services
Keratin or smoothing treatments
Hair condition
Breakage
Your realistic maintenance routine
