Pinterest Hair vs. Your Hair: How We Turn Inspiration Into YOUR Hair

You found the picture.
The color is perfect. The layers are perfect. The bangs are perfect. You saved it immediately and thought:
“THIS. I want this.” 😂
Bring it to me.
Seriously.
I love inspiration photos.
But here's the part I want every client to understand:
An inspiration photo is the beginning of the conversation — not a promise that we're going to copy another person's hair exactly.
The goal isn't to give you her hair.
The goal is to figure out what you love about the picture and translate it into something that works for YOUR hair.
And sometimes? Your perfect haircut or color isn't even in one picture.
We may have to build it together.
First: Please Bring the Pictures
Don't worry about whether the person in the photo has the same face shape, age, skin tone or hair texture as you.
If you like it, save it.
And don't just bring me one picture.
Bring the blonde from one photo.
The layers from another.
The length from another.
The bangs you absolutely do NOT want. 😂
All of that information helps.
One of my favorite things to tell clients is:
You don't need to speak hairstylist. That's my job.
You just need to show me what catches your eye.
Then we figure out why.
THE PHOTO → YOUR HAIR → THE PLAN → THE RESULT
That's really what a good consultation looks like.
1. THE PHOTO: What Do You Actually Love?
When you show me an inspiration picture, I don't just look at the finished hairstyle.
I'm looking for the specific pieces you're responding to.
Maybe you say, “I love this haircut.”
But what you really love is the face framing.
Or the fullness at the bottom.
Or how short it is around the ear.
Or the movement in the layers.
Maybe it's actually the styling and not the haircut at all.
The same thing happens with color.
You may love a brunette photo because of the brightness around the face — not necessarily because you want that exact shade of brown.
That's why I'll ask questions.
What do you love about this?
And just as importantly:
What DON'T you like?
Sometimes what you don't want tells me even more.
2. YOUR HAIR: What's Our Starting Canvas?
Now we look at you.
Your natural texture matters.
Your density matters.
Your current length matters.
Your previous color matters.
Your gray matters.
Your curl pattern matters.
Your hairline and growth patterns matter.
And your hair's current condition definitely matters.
Two people can bring me the exact same inspiration photo and leave with two different versions of that look.
That's not a mistake. That's customization.
The goal is to create the version that makes sense for the person sitting in my chair.
3. THE PLAN: This Is Where Hair Therapy Happens 💚
Now we put the two together.
What you love + what your hair can do + how much maintenance you actually want = our plan.
And this is where multiple inspiration pictures can be AMAZING.
Maybe you want:
The length from Photo #1The layers from Photo #2The face frame from Photo #3And absolutely NONE of the bangs from Photo #4. 😂
Perfect.
We can talk about that.
Sometimes your perfect haircut isn't sitting in one inspiration photo. Sometimes we have to build it together.
Don't Just Bring Me the Front
This is a BIG one.
The SIDE tells the story.
A beautiful front-view picture doesn't tell me everything about the haircut.
What's happening behind the ear?
Where do the layers start?
What's happening at the crown?
Is the back blunt, rounded, stacked or V-shaped?
How much length is actually back there?
If you can find them, bring:
A front photoA side photoA back photo
They don't even have to be the same person.
In fact, sometimes that's better.
We're building a blueprint.
Color Inspiration Needs Translating Too
Hair color photographs can be especially tricky.
Lighting can completely change how a color appears.
A brunette can look warm chocolate indoors and much lighter outside.
Blonde can look creamy in one picture and icy in another.
And vivid colors can photograph completely differently depending on lighting and editing.
So instead of only asking:
“What formula makes this color?”
I'm also thinking:
What's your current starting level?
Is there previous color on the hair?
How light would the hair need to become first?
Where is the brightness placed?
How much dimension is there?
How much maintenance will this require?
And most importantly:
Can we get there while respecting the condition of your hair?
Healthy hair still gets a vote. 💚
Pinterest Doesn't Show You the Maintenance
This might be the most important part.
That effortless-looking haircut may require a round-brush blowout.
Those beautiful waves may have been created with a curling iron.
That dimensional blonde may require several hours in the salon plus toner and maintenance appointments.
That vivid pink may have required bleaching first — and it may need frequent refreshing.
So part of translating your inspiration is talking about:
What will this take in the salon?
AND
What will this take from you at home?
Because I don't want to give you a haircut you only love when I style it.
I want you to understand how to live with it.
What If Your Inspiration Isn't Possible Today?
Then we make a plan.
Sometimes we can do exactly what you're imagining in one appointment.
Sometimes we're going to need two or three appointments.
And sometimes your hair may tell us that a different direction is the healthier choice.
That doesn't mean the inspiration picture was useless.
It gave us a destination.
Now we just need the right route to get there.
Your Inspiration Photo Is Not a Test
Please don't sit in my chair worrying that you're using the wrong salon words.
You don't need to know whether something is a long layer, butterfly layer, C-cut, root melt, toner, gloss, partial highlight or balayage.
That's exactly why I've been creating all of my visual guides.
Your job is to tell me what you like.
My job is to translate it.
That's Hair Therapy.
Sparkle's Hair Therapy Tip 💚
Before your next appointment, create a little inspiration folder on your phone.
Save:
FRONT — what you loveSIDE — what you loveBACK — what you loveCOLOR — what you loveABSOLUTELY NOT — what you don't want 😂
Then bring it with you.
We don't have to copy any one picture.
We'll use them to have a better conversation and create something that feels like you.
Because the best result isn't:
“I got the Pinterest haircut.”
It's:
“We took the inspiration…and made it mine.”
