6 choices that shape the final look

Medium-length hair can look simple, but there are a lot of small decisions that completely change the finished haircut.
For this guide, I think of medium hair as longer than a French bob but no longer than the shoulders.
That gives us a lot of room to play with shape, movement, face framing, volume, and styling.
So before you come into the salon and say:
“I just want it somewhere around my shoulders…”
Here are the six things I want you to think about first.
1. The Perimeter
Where do you want the length to sit?
This is the first decision because even an inch or two can change the whole haircut.
You may want it to sit:
At the neck
Around the collarbone
Right at the shoulders
The shorter the perimeter, the more it starts to feel like a lob or longer bob.
The closer it gets to the shoulders, the more movement and styling flexibility you have.
Ask yourself:
Where do I actually want the bottom of the haircut to hit?
2. Layers
How much movement do you want?
Not all medium haircuts need layers.
You can keep the haircut:
One length
Add soft layers
Add more noticeable layers for movement and bounce
A one-length cut usually feels heavier, sleeker, and fuller around the bottom.
Soft layers remove some weight without changing the overall shape too much.
More layers create more movement, volume, and styling options.
Ask yourself:
Do I want my hair to feel solid and full, or lighter and more movable?
3. Face Framing
Where should the front hit?
This is where the haircut starts becoming personal.
Your face-framing pieces can begin around:
Cheekbone
Lip
Chin
Shorter face framing brings more attention to the face.
Longer face framing feels softer and gives you more options for curling, tucking, or pulling your hair back.
Hair Therapy Tip 💚
Don't only tell me that you want “face-framing layers.”
Tell me where you want that first piece to land.
That makes a huge difference.
4. The Sides
What shape do you like?
Look at the haircut from the side.
Do you want it:
Full + blunt
Softly beveled
Longer in the front
A full, blunt side gives you a stronger, heavier silhouette.
A beveled shape feels softer and can create more movement.
A longer front gives you that slightly angled or A-line look.
This is one of those details clients often don’t notice until I ask them to look at the side of their inspiration photo.
Ask yourself:
Do I like the shape from the side as much as I like the front?
5. Volume
How much fullness do you want?
The same medium-length haircut can be styled three completely different ways.
You may want:
Sleek
Soft fullness
Big, bouncy volume
That matters because the way I layer the haircut should support the way you actually want to wear it.
If you love a smooth, sleek finish, we may not need a lot of layering.
If you love big round-brush volume and movement, we may want to create more shape inside the haircut.
Ask yourself:
Do I want my haircut to lay smooth, move softly, or give me maximum bounce?
6. Lifestyle
How do you really wear your hair?
This one is just as important as the picture you bring me.
I want to know:
Do you need to pull it into a ponytail?
Do you air-dry?
Do you use a flat iron or curling iron?
Do you blow it out regularly?
How much styling do you actually want to do?
Do you want something lower-maintenance?
A haircut can look amazing in a photo and still be completely wrong for your daily routine.
If you need your hair to go into a ponytail five days a week, we need to think carefully about how short those front layers should be.
If you almost never use hot tools, we should choose a shape that works with your natural texture.
The best haircut is one that works on Tuesday morning — not only when you leave the salon.
Bring More Than One Photo
This is still one of my favorite consultation tips.
You do not have to find one “perfect” haircut picture.
Bring me:
a front you like
a side you like
a back you like
a face frame you like
a length you like
a level of volume you like
They do not have to come from the same haircut.
I can take the parts you love and put them together into something that works for your hair texture, density, face shape, and lifestyle.
That gives me so much more useful information than:
“Make it look like this.”
Sparkle’s Hair Therapy Tip 💚
Medium hair gives you a lot of options, which is exactly why the details matter.
Before your appointment, think about:
Perimeter. Layers. Face framing. Side shape. Volume. Lifestyle.
The more specific you can be about what you like — and what you don’t like — the better we can build the right haircut together.
