Which Highlight Service Should I Book?

Accent, Crown, Partial, Full, Balayage…Let’s Clear This Up

You know you want to be brighter.

You found the inspiration photo.

You’re ready for highlights.

Then you open the booking menu and suddenly see:

Accent. Crown. Partial. Full. Balayage. Bleach Retouch. Full Bleach Out.

And now you're thinking…

“Sparkle, I just want my hair lighter. Which one do I pick?” 😂

This guide is for you.

Choosing the correct lightening service isn't only about price. It determines how much hair we have time to work on, how much product is needed, where you'll see brightness, and ultimately what kind of result we can realistically create during your appointment.

If you accidentally book an Accent Highlight when the picture you're showing me requires a Full Highlight, we can't squeeze several extra hours of work into an appointment that wasn't scheduled for it.

So here's the easiest way to understand the difference.

✨ Accent Highlight

Think: The Money Piece

This is your little pop of brightness around the face.

The focus is primarily along the front hairline to brighten your complexion without highlighting the entire head.

Book an Accent Highlight if:

• You want a brighter money piece

• Your overall color still looks good

• You only want brightness around your face

• You want a small refresh between larger highlight appointments

What you'll see:

Brightness in the front.

You are not going to see highlights throughout the crown, sides and back.

Approximate appointment window: about 1½–2 hours

👑 Crown Highlight

Think: Where a Crown Would Sit

Now we're going one step further.

A Crown Highlight includes your Accent Highlight plus highlights throughout the top/crown area of your head.

This is great when you want brightness where it's most visible but don't necessarily need the underneath of your hair highlighted.

Book a Crown Highlight if:

• Your front and top need refreshing

• The underneath still looks good

• You wear your hair down most of the time

• You want more dimension than a money piece without committing to a partial or full

What you'll see:

Brightness around the face and across the top of the head.

Approximate appointment window: about 2–2½ hours

💫 Partial Highlight

Think: The Headband Area

A Partial Highlight gives us substantially more coverage.

Think of the area where a wide headband would sit:

front + sides + crown + face-framing accent.

This is where we begin creating noticeably more dimension throughout the hairstyle.

Book a Partial Highlight if:

• You want brightness around your entire face

• You want dimension through the top and sides

• Your underneath doesn't need much lightening

• You're maintaining an existing highlighted look

What you'll see:

Brightness from the front, top and sides.

When your hair moves, you'll see significantly more dimension than you would with a Crown Highlight.

Approximate appointment window: about 2½–3½ hours

✨ Full Highlight

Think: The Whole Head

This one means exactly what it sounds like.

We're highlighting throughout the entire head.

That means:

Accent + Crown + Front Sides + Back + Underneath

This is your traditional all-over foil service.

Book a Full Highlight if:

• You want brightness throughout your entire head

• Your underneath has become too dark

• You wear your hair up often

• You want highlights visible from every direction

• You're making a significant move toward being lighter

What you'll see:

Dimension everywhere.

When your hair is down, up, pulled back or moving, you'll see highlighted pieces throughout.

Approximate appointment window: about 3–4+ hours

🤎 Balayage

Think: Maximum Dimensional Lightening

At Sparkle Sessions, Balayage is my most extensive dimensional-lightening appointment.

Depending on your desired result, I may use foils, hand painting or a combination of techniques.

We're not only addressing your roots and placement—we may also be bringing lightness through the mid-lengths and ends to create the overall result.

Book Balayage if:

• You're making a larger color transformation

• You want substantial dimension

• Your mids and ends also need to be lightened

• You're looking for a more customized, dimensional result

• Your inspiration photo shows brightness throughout the entire hairstyle

What you'll see:

A much more complete dimensional transformation from roots through lengths and ends.

Approximate appointment window: about 3½–5+ hours

And this is an important one:

Balayage describes a customized lightening approach—not simply “a few highlights.”

The amount of work needed depends heavily on your starting color, previous color, density, length and desired result.

💛 Bleach Retouch

Completely Different From Highlights

A Bleach Retouch has no foils.

Instead, the new growth at the scalp is completely lightened.

Think platinum blondes and clients maintaining an all-over lightened look rather than dimensional highlights.

Book a Bleach Retouch if:

• Your hair is already globally blonde

• You need your new growth lightened

• You don't want darker hair left between highlighted pieces

What you'll see:

One continuous, lighter color rather than ribbons of dimension.

Approximate appointment window: about 2½–3½ hours

🤍 Full Bleach Out

When We Want EVERYTHING Lighter

This is not a Full Highlight.

There are no intentional darker pieces left between foils.

We're lightening the entire head of hair to create a much lighter overall canvas.

This is a major chemical service and may take considerably longer depending on:

• Starting level

• Previous color

• Hair length

• Hair density

• Hair condition

• Target shade

Book a Full Bleach Out if:

You want to move toward an all-over blonde or significantly lighter result, rather than a highlighted look.

Approximate appointment window: about 4–6+ hours, and some transformations may require more than one session.

Why Booking the Right Service Matters

Here's the part I really want clients to understand.

You're not just reserving a service. You're reserving TIME.

An Accent Highlight and a Balayage cannot fit into the same appointment window.

If you book too small of a service, I may not have enough time to give you the result you're expecting.

That can mean we have to:

• Adjust the goal

• Do only part of the transformation

• Schedule another appointment

• Or reschedule for a service with enough time

And I'd much rather have enough time booked from the beginning so neither of us feels rushed.

More hair being highlighted = more sections + more product + more processing + more toning + more finishing time.

That's why the services aren't interchangeable.

Here's my easiest advice:

Don't book based on the name you think you need.

Book based on where you want to see brightness.

Only around your face?Accent.

Face and crown?Crown.

Front, crown and sides?Partial.

Everywhere?Full.

Major dimensional transformation through the lengths?Balayage.

Completely blonde at the roots?Bleach Retouch.

Want everything lightened?Full Bleach Out.

And if you still have absolutely no idea?
